BRICS Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement and Iran’s Role After Membership

The BRICS Science, Technology, and Innovation Cooperation Agreement was approved in March 2015 among the initial BRICS members – the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Russian Federation, the Republic of India, the People’s Republic of China, and the Republic of South Africa – in Brasília, Brazil. This agreement plays a significant role in guiding the overall cooperation process among BRICS countries and provides a strategic framework for collaboration in science, technology, and innovation to address common social and economic challenges.

Main Objectives of the Agreement

Information and Policy Sharing

The agreement focuses on sharing and exchanging information related to policies and strategies in the field of science, technology, and innovation among member countries.

Strengthening Joint Innovation Projects

This framework provides opportunities to leverage connections and programs aimed at enhancing joint innovation projects.

Developing Long-Term Cooperation Programs

The agreement also emphasizes the creation of mutual and long-term cooperation programs among member countries.

Iran’s Role After Membership

After Iran’s official membership in the BRICS union in January 2024, the text of the agreement along with its annex was provided by the Russian side through Iran’s then Sherpa to the Center for Transformation and Progress Cooperation. The center conducted expert reviews and subsequently submitted its opinions and recommendations to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
