Introduction to the BRICS Biotechnology and Biomedicine Working Group

The Biotechnology and Biomedicine Working Group, covering human health and neuroscience, has held meetings five times so far in Russia (2017 and 2024), South Africa (2018), Brazil (2019), and China (2021). Brazil and Russia act as coordinating countries within this working group.

Establishment of the BRICS Vaccine Center

The BRICS Vaccine Research and Development Center was officially launched in 2022 within the framework of the Biotechnology Working Group, initiated by China with the support of Russia and Brazil. The center plays a crucial role in combating biological threats such as influenza, tuberculosis, and HIV, preparing member countries’ health systems for future challenges, and creating mechanisms for prevention, diagnosis, and rapid response to emerging viruses.

Publication of Scientific Journals and Research Collaboration

Within the framework of this working group, several scientific journals have been published with the support of member countries’ Ministries of Health. This initiative has significantly contributed to the development of medical and biotechnological knowledge across BRICS countries.

Formation of the BRICS Neuroscience Society

In 2024, the working group members agreed to establish the BRICS Neuroscience Society and requested joint programs in agricultural biotechnology and neuroscience. The participation of the Iranian delegation in this session was active and highly significant.
