The operational activities of the BRICS New Development Bank focus on six main sectors: clean energy and energy efficiency, transport infrastructure, water and sanitation, environmental protection, social infrastructure, and digital infrastructure. Each of these sectors is briefly described below.
The BRICS New Development Bank supports member countries’ transition toward low-carbon development and prioritizes renewable and clean energy projects, as well as improving the efficiency of energy transmission, distribution, and storage through transformative technologies. The bank does not allocate new financing to coal-fired power capacity and considers socio-economic challenges associated with the energy transition.
The bank supports the development of intercity and urban transport networks and regional connectivity infrastructure such as roads, ports, and airports. Intelligent transport projects using greenhouse gas reduction technologies are prioritized.
The BRICS New Development Bank finances projects that facilitate universal access to safe drinking water and adequate healthcare services, promote sustainable water resource management, and reduce vulnerability to water-related disasters.
The bank supports projects that protect and restore key ecosystems, promote natural resource management, and reduce pollutants. Financing may include emerging technologies for emission reduction.
The bank supports the construction and renovation of social infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, affordable housing, and cultural facilities, prioritizing projects that deliver flexible and rapid digital social services.
To address the digital divide, the bank finances projects for the development and modernization of national and international digital infrastructure, with particular emphasis on connecting less developed regions.
The BRICS New Development Bank continues to focus on high-impact operations aligned with member countries’ development objectives and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. The bank aims to allocate 40% of its total approved loans to projects that contribute to climate mitigation and adaptation and support member countries’ transition toward more sustainable development pathways.
