Introduction to the BRICS Astronomy Working Group

The BRICS Astronomy Working Group is one of the oldest and most active thematic working groups within the BRICS framework. Since its establishment in 2015, the group has convened ten official meetings. South Africa (2015, 2018, and 2023), Russia (2016, 2020, and 2024), India (2017 and 2021), Brazil (2019), and China (2022) have hosted these meetings.

Flagship Project: BRICS Intelligent Telescope and Data Network (BITDN)

In 2019, the Astronomy Working Group launched its first flagship initiative, the BRICS Intelligent Telescope and Data Network (BITDN). Leveraging the wide geographical distribution of BRICS member states, this network provides significant capacity for joint astronomical observations, collaborative research, and the sharing of astronomical data.

Establishment of a Virtual Astronomy Association

The working group is also exploring the establishment of a “BRICS Virtual Astronomy Association.” This initiative aims to create an integrated online platform that facilitates access to and exchange of observational and research data in the field of astronomy among BRICS members.

The Role of South Africa

South Africa serves as the coordinating country of the Astronomy Working Group. Owing to its advanced astronomical infrastructure, the country plays a pivotal role in advancing the group’s programs and projects.

Interdisciplinary Nature of the Working Group

Like other BRICS cooperation mechanisms, the Astronomy Working Group has a strong interdisciplinary character. Its activities require technological capabilities in information technology, data processing, communications, and large-scale data storage. This necessitates close coordination and collaboration among member countries to develop and strengthen the required infrastructure.
