NGS-BRICS Project: BRICS Cooperation in Biotechnology and Biomedicine
The NGS-BRICS project formed a five-country consortium to integrate national genome
research and develop innovative solutions to address the COVID-19 pandemic. Core
objectives included sharing SARS-CoV-2 genomic knowledge across BRICS countries,
tracking virus spread, identifying precise pandemic emergence patterns, developing
diagnostic and therapeutic approaches based on genome sequencing, and strengthening
national capacities for COVID-19 genomic data production and analysis.
Throughout the project, scientists collaborated online and exchanged real-time data,
significantly improving surveillance approaches during the pandemic and enhancing
human resource capacity across BRICS member states.
