NDB Allocates Loan for Carbon-Neutral Airport Development in China
To enhance sustainability and reduce carbon emissions in the aviation industry, the New Development Bank (NDB) has approved a loan of 1.448 billion Yuan (USD 204 million) to transform Wusu Taiyuan International Airport (TWIA) into China’s first carbon-neutral airport.
As part of this project, TWIA will become the first airport in China to install over 100 megawatts of solar panels, particularly across the runways. This initiative will play a crucial role in providing clean energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
The airport will also pilot a system called PEDF, an integrated solar-based energy system capable of storing generated electricity and optimizing energy consumption.
Furthermore, TWIA is set to operate as the first regional hub airport, connecting direct flights and enabling passenger and cargo transfers among various regional routes.
Collectively, these measures will significantly reduce annual carbon emissions from the airport, making TWIA a benchmark for low-carbon airport development at regional and global levels.
NDB’s support for this project not only aligns with China’s carbon-neutral goals but also serves as a successful model for other BRICS member countries.
Previously, in June 2024, NDB organized a workshop titled “Green and Low-Carbon Airport Development” to share practical knowledge and experiences among experts and relevant institutions, optimizing the design and operation of low-carbon airports.
This project, aimed at enhancing airport operational capabilities and providing infrastructure for widespread renewable energy use, reflects the New Development Bank’s commitment to sustainable development, technological innovation, and strengthened cooperation among member countries.
