Egypt Emerges as a New Energy Hub for BRICS

To strengthen energy capabilities within the BRICS bloc, Egypt announced the completion of a new well at the Zohr gas field, reaching an unprecedented production level. Located in the Mediterranean waters, this field is expected to produce approximately 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas per day—equivalent to nearly 12.5 million barrels of oil per day—surpassing the production capacity of some BRICS members and major energy exporters such as Brazil and Canada.

This development reinforces Egypt’s position as a key player in the regional and global gas supply chain, significantly reducing its dependence on energy imports.

In addition to Zohr, Egypt is advancing another project at the Denise field, located approximately 98 meters below sea level, with drilling planned to reach a depth of 4.2 kilometers to explore and assess new reserves. Expanding these capacities will not only make Egypt a major gas supplier for BRICS countries but also increase exports to other markets, including Israel, Europe, and other destinations via LNG and pipeline infrastructure.

Egypt’s recent $35 billion agreement for gas imports from the Leviathan field further demonstrates its commitment to solidifying its role as an emerging energy hub. Together, these developments enhance BRICS’ energy diversity and security.
