Launch of the China–BRICS Research Center for the Development of New Quality Productive Forces
With the aim of deepening technological and innovation cooperation among BRICS member states, the inaugural meeting of the China–BRICS Research Center on New Quality Productive Forces was held in Beijing in January 2026. The concept of new quality productive forces, first introduced in 2023, refers to labor productivity driven by scientific innovation, advanced technologies, and industrial transformation, distinguishing it from conventional economic growth models.
The strategic importance of this approach is reflected in its designation as one of the key objectives of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), which prioritizes guiding the development of these productive forces. In line with this direction, China’s innovation index recorded a 5.3 percent increase in 2024, highlighting the direct role of innovation in supporting economic growth.
Designed with a “physical + networked” structure, the China–BRICS Research Center is expected to serve as an international platform for research, academic exchange, and technological cooperation within the BRICS framework. According to China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, BRICS has emerged as one of the most influential cooperation mechanisms among emerging economies and developing countries.
The idea of establishing the center was first proposed by the Chinese Prime Minister at the 2025 BRICS Summit, reflecting a shared strategic focus on innovation-driven development, talent cultivation, and the strengthening of scientific and industrial cooperation. The center will concentrate on joint research across multiple fields, expanding academic exchanges, human resource training and mobility, and building a shared research network to support policymaking and sustainable growth in BRICS countries.
Analysts view the launch of the China–BRICS Research Center as a symbol of China’s willingness to share its technological experience and achievements with other BRICS members. International experts emphasize that the development of new quality productive forces not only contributes to a green and technology-driven economy but also enhances access for developing countries to advanced technologies, the digital economy, and sustainable growth through BRICS cooperation.
