BRICS Emphasizes the Need for Global and Inclusive Governance in Artificial Intelligence – Part One

On the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in September 2025, foreign ministers of BRICS countries expressed support for global AI governance. Accordingly, AI governance should be based on national sovereignty, data protection, equitable access to technology, and respect for human rights, ensuring that developing countries are not deprived of the benefits of this technology.

One of the main topics at this meeting was the advancement of information technology and the enhancement of capabilities in developing countries in the field of AI. BRICS countries emphasized the need to build capacity in these nations to leverage the economic, social, and cultural benefits of AI.

Additionally, the importance of establishing a global infrastructure for data sharing and collaboration in AI research and development was highlighted so that developing countries could benefit from global innovation while maintaining national sovereignty and local regulations.

One of the most important applications of AI discussed at the meeting was its use in addressing global challenges such as climate change, poverty, health crises, and natural disasters. Particularly in smart agriculture, AI can analyze sensor and satellite data to help farmers in developing countries identify optimal methods for irrigation, fertilization, and natural resource use, thereby reducing resource consumption and increasing productivity.

This technology also contributes to sustainable development and environmental protection.
