Flagship BRICS Projects in Science, Technology, and Innovation

Flagship projects encompass research and development initiatives of strategic importance within BRICS member countries, supported by BRICS working groups. These projects are mission-oriented, addressing both global challenges and shared issues among BRICS countries. They are expected to deliver tangible scientific, technological, and societal outcomes, with a strong focus on practical applications.

Main Features of Flagship Projects

  • Long-term mission and research agenda, including short-term and mid-term objectives, should be clearly defined to achieve a shared vision.
  • An interdisciplinary approach must be adopted, engaging scientists from at least two different fields and workforce from diverse sectors, including non-academic contributors.
  • Flagship project consortia should include all five BRICS countries.
  • Project duration is set between 3 to 5 years.

Flagship Project Meeting

The BRICS Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Working Group organized an independent event on flagship projects in June 2022, attended by over 60 participants including specialized ST&I working groups, policymakers, representatives of funding institutions supporting joint projects, participants in BRICS projects (under framework program calls), and other interested parties from BRICS countries.

The purpose of the meeting was to exchange views on flagship projects, including thematic areas of proposal calls, defining flagship projects, requirements and expected outcomes, and other related issues.
