Brazil and China Agree on BRICS Summit Cooperation Focused on Uranium Development
During the BRICS Summit in Brazil in July 2025, the Ministry of Mines and Energy of Brazil and the Chinese energy company CGN signed an agreement to collaborate on energy transition and the peaceful and sustainable use of nuclear mineral resources. This agreement is part of a broader bilateral contract under which CGN has previously invested in renewable energy projects in Brazil.
According to Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy, the purpose of this cooperation is to develop clean and renewable energy production in the country and strengthen Brazil’s role in the global energy transition, alongside developing the domestic mineral supply chain. The agreement also includes cooperation in research, development, and innovation in sustainable energy technologies, with joint actions planned focusing on modernizing the mineral supply chain.
Technical collaborations with universities, research centers, and private and public institutions specializing in mineral extraction, materials engineering, and sustainable resource management are also planned. The agreement represents a significant step toward strengthening the nuclear technology chain and developing sustainable energy in Brazil, potentially enhancing the country’s position in regional and global uranium and nuclear energy markets.
It is noteworthy that Brazil possesses a total of 210,000 tons of uranium distributed across three main states: Minas Gerais, Bahia, and Ceará. The country’s only active mine currently has a production capacity of 340 tons of uranium per year.
