BRICS Countries Focus on Quantum Technologies – Part Two
Alongside quantum computing, quantum communications and quantum sensors were highlighted as two key technological pillars in the final BRICS summit statement in Brazil; technologies that play a major role in next-generation digital security, industry, and smart monitoring.
Quantum communications, especially in the field of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), enable information transfer with a physical level of security. In these systems, any attempt to eavesdrop or tamper with data changes the quantum state of photons and is immediately detectable. This feature makes quantum communications one of the most secure methods of data exchange in the world, essential for banking networks, critical infrastructure, defense systems, government communications, and sensitive industries.
BRICS members’ emphasis on quantum communications reflects the bloc’s focus on strengthening domestic capabilities and increasing long-term cyber resilience; an approach more about technological synergy, knowledge exchange, and strategic dependency reduction than immediate operational network deployment.
Regarding quantum sensors, BRICS countries have focused on industrial applications. These sensors leverage quantum phenomena to measure minute gravitational changes, magnetic fields, temporal fluctuations, and microscopic vibrations. Such precision enables breakthroughs in mineral and energy exploration, groundwater management, GPS-free navigation, infrastructure monitoring, pipelines, power plants, and transportation networks.
The BRICS summit statement also emphasized multilateral technological collaboration, the development of shared laboratories, training specialized quantum personnel, and connecting the research-to-industry chain. This cooperative model allows BRICS members to share the high costs of quantum technology development, accelerate technology maturation, and prevent knowledge and equipment monopolies by a few countries.
Overall, BRICS members’ focus on quantum computing, communications, and sensors signals the bloc’s strategic orientation towards preparedness for future technological transformations.
