Comprehensive Report of the 4th BRICS Working Group on Renewable and New Energies Hosted by Iran
Amid growing challenges related to climate change, increasing global energy demand, and the need to achieve sustainable development, international meetings focused on renewable and new energy have gained heightened importance. The Fourth Meeting of the BRICS Working Group on New, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency was held on May 25–26, 2025, hosted by the Islamic Republic of Iran at the Parsian Azadi Hotel in Tehran.
The meeting was conducted in a hybrid format, with official representatives and experts from Brazil, China, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates in attendance. Delegates from Iran, China, Russia, and Brazil participated in person, while representatives of other countries joined virtually.
Main Objectives of the Meeting
The meeting primarily aimed to strengthen scientific and technological cooperation among BRICS Plus member states in the fields of renewable and new energy, facilitate knowledge exchange, promote joint research initiatives, and enhance energy efficiency at national and regional levels. Key agenda items included the role of artificial intelligence in clean energy, energy transition pathways, and the formulation of joint projects.
Overview of the Sessions
Session 1 – Opening and Review of Previous Activities
The meeting commenced with opening remarks and welcome speeches. Representatives of participating countries delivered statements outlining their national priorities in renewable energy and reaffirmed their commitment to the objectives of the BRICS Working Group.
Session 2 – Presentation of Innovations and Joint Projects
This session highlighted the latest technological and scientific advancements achieved by BRICS member countries in three key areas: applications of artificial intelligence in renewable energy, energy transition strategies, and improvements in energy efficiency.
Session 3 – Iran’s Energy Landscape and Joint Project Proposals
The session began with a comprehensive presentation on the current status of renewable energy development in Iran. Subsequently, participating countries introduced proposed joint projects within the framework of BRICS scientific and technological cooperation.
Session 4 – BRICS Work Plan for 2025–2026
During this session, the strategic cooperation plan for the years 2025–2026 was discussed and formulated. Delegates shared their national strategies, priorities, and expectations for future collaboration.
Session 5 – Adoption of the Final Statement
The draft final statement of the Working Group was reviewed, amended where necessary, and adopted by consensus. The meeting concluded with a group photo session.
Post-Meeting Scientific Visits
Following the conclusion of the sessions, participating delegations visited the Iran Energy Research Institute and the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA). These visits showcased Iran’s latest achievements and infrastructure in clean energy, including smart grids, energy storage systems, and hybrid energy solutions.
