BRICS green economy in action: experience of China, Russia, and India

The Role and Actions of BRICS Member States in the Transition to a Green Economy

Meanwhile, Russia has also undertaken extensive measures to protect the environment by allocating substantial financial resources. According to Russia’s federal budget law, the country approved environmental protection budgets of USD 16.19 billion and USD 5.9 billion for 2023 and 2024, respectively, and plans to spend USD 5.8 billion and USD 6.5 billion in 2025 and 2026. Russia’s national Environmental Well-being program focuses on developing a circular economy, reducing pollutants, and allocating significant financial resources to environmental initiatives.

India, as the world’s most populous country and a BRICS member, has also played a significant role in collective environmental efforts. The country has received USD 1.16 billion through the United Nations climate finance mechanism for climate-related projects and has implemented measures such as banning the production and sale of 19 types of single-use plastics. Another major initiative is India’s commitment to completely phase out gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2030, along with the Swachh Bharat Mission aimed at improving sanitation conditions in residential areas.

India’s contribution to achieving environmental objectives among BRICS countries emphasizes its focus on the transition to a green economy, sustainable agriculture, rational use of water resources, and the development of the digital economy.
