India’s Contribution to Sustainable Agriculture as a BRICS Member
With the aim of promoting sustainable agriculture and global food security, emergency cooperation in food crises, facilitating agricultural trade, and utilizing digital solutions, the agriculture ministers of BRICS countries, including India, have signed a joint statement.
The statement outlines mechanisms for emergency collaboration among BRICS countries, including India, in cases of food shortages or sudden price spikes. Key measures highlighted in the statement include strengthening national food reserves, investing in storage and warehousing infrastructure, and supporting public policy initiatives.
In the field of agricultural trade, the statement sets objectives to reduce unnecessary barriers, improve transparency, and facilitate the exchange of agricultural products among BRICS countries. It also foresees the introduction of digital certificates to simplify administrative procedures and reduce bureaucracy.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil, BRICS countries collectively account for 54.5% of the world’s population. These countries also hold one-third of the world’s agricultural land and more than one-third of global freshwater resources. Together, they contribute to 75% of global agricultural production and are home to about half of the world’s 550 million family farms.
